READ  READ  READ  READ  READ  READ

WE LOVE to READ at Shirley Hills!

February is "I Love To Read" month here at Shirley Hills.  We kicked off this month long celebration with an Olympic Reading Challenge opening ceremony.  Throughout the month students and staff have kept track of their reading minutes on reading calenders.  The Book Fair has arrived, Read-A-Thon pledges collected and our students can hardly wait for our Mystery Readers to make an appearance this Friday the 28th! We will celebrate Read Across America Day on March 3rd in honor of Dr. Suess' Birthday!

BUNDLE UP! It's COLD outside!
We love to play outside at Shirley Hills.  Fresh air does the body good so we try to get outside every day.  There are some days that are too cold for us to go outside.  If the temperature is below ZERO, we stay inside for recess.  If the windchill is below -10 degrees, we will stay inside as well.  Please remember to send your kids dressed for the weather.....Hats, mittens, snowpants, boots and coats, so they can have some fun in the snow!

CAUTION! ARTISTS AT WORK!
We are so proud of our Shirley Hills Art Department led by our most talented Artist, Mrs. Olaussen!

We Dig Phy.Ed with Mr. Halvarson!

We "Dig" Shirley Hills!
2013-2014

Congratulations Shirley Hills! Our school has been named by the Minnesota Department of Education as a Reward School for the year of 2013. In fact, this is the 3rd year in a row we have received this recognition.  There are only 20 schools in the entire state of Minnesota to have received the Reward designation three times in a row! This designation reflects the gains our school has made in student proficiency, growth, and achievement gap reduction.  In the words of the Commission of Education, "This is an incredible achievement."  Way to go students, parents, and staff! Your dedication and efforts are making a difference!

WE Stop Bullying!
This year in our character class we will be focusing on putting a stop to bullying.  Students have signed an anti-bullying poster that will be seen outside of every classroom and glow in the dark orange wristbands that say STOP...WALK...TALK are being handed out to everyone. These wristbands are a reminder to us all that we need to work together to put a stop to bullying.  What does STOP WALK TALK mean?

STOP...
Use Hand Signal
Say "STOP" clearly
If "STOP" is said to you...stop what you are doing!
If you see or hear problem behavior speak up...say "STOP"

WALK...
If behavior continues....Remove yourself from the problem behavior
Stay Calm

TALK...
Find an adult and tell them what happened
If you see/hear bullying, tell an adult
This is not tattling
