• Music Programs

"Influenced by the Orff and Kodaly approaches of music education, our program teaches students to explore, enjoy and perform to the best of their abilities,” says Mrs. Bray.

  • Enrichment Programs

GATES and Enrichment programming includes special offerings like participation in the Creativity Festival at the University of Minnesota in January.

  • Grandfriends Day

One of the biggest days of the year is "Grandfriends Day." Students invite grandparents or other special friends to a music program and to their classrooms to see their work.

  • Operetta

Shirley Hills every-other-year operetta featured a cast of 110 2nd-4th graders under the direction of music teacher Melissa Bray.

  • Team Shirley Hills

Students and staff celebrate successes and discuss ways to give back to the community during their annual back-to-school assembly.

  • Cross Country Skiing

Phy Ed teacher Jim Halvarson teaches a cross country ski unit as part of the physical education program. The unit lasts three weeks and rotates with a skating unit.

  • Blue Ribbon Award Winner

Shirley Hills students won the coveted NCLB award by scoring in the top 10% on state tests. Shirley Hills is now among the top 413 schools in the nation.

  • Science Standards

We work with FOSS Science Kits for hands-on exploratory learning. Look for our NEW engineering program coming next fall.

  • Art Classes

Shirley Hills students won 87 ribbons at the 2010 State Fair. Westonka Schools took home nearly 200 ribbons and had 4 Grand Champions.

  • Technology

Teachers can work with students at varying academic levels at the same time and tailor activities to meet students' individual needs with the new wireless labs.

  • Wolf Ridge

A week at Wolf Ridge is a rite of passage for 4th-graders. Popular activities include a ropes course, rock climbing, Voyageur canoe trip, and evening bonfire.

Caring For our Community
January is off to a great start! This year we are showing our support for 3rd grader Hank and helping to fight diabetes.  The dollars collected will go to Camp Needlepoint, a camp for kids with diabetes. Monday we had a great kick-off to our activites.  Thank you to all the students and families who have been showing support by attending the "SH Photo Booth," purchasing bracelets, and attending Parents and Pasteries.  At Parents and Pasteries we put together over 165 snack bags for the Ronald McDonald House.  TEAM:Shirley Hills always knows how to come together to support a great cause.

Have a wonderful winter break!  Enjoy time with your family and friends.  We are dreaming of some snow to add to the winter excitement.
See you back at Shirley Hills in 2012!

From the "Ugly" Sweater Staff at Shirley Hills
Anti-Bullying Campaign

At Shirley Hills we are TEAMing up against bullies.  The students have learned a lot about standing up for themselves and for those around them during character class and morning meeting.  Every child at Shirley Hills agreed to sign a "TEAM Up Against Bullying" poster that you can see hanging outside their classroom.  This is a promise to their classmates and their school that they will be kind with their actions and words.
The posters have been a huge hit!

Kindergarten Round-Up

It is already time for Kindergarten Round-Up.  Be at Shirley Hills with your next year kindergartener on January 17th at either 4:00 or 6:00.  Meet the teachers, hear about the kindergarteners' day, do a Shirley Hills scavenger hunt, and take a bus ride.

Congratulations!
